El Alamein

El Alamein 1942

A bren gun crew of the 5th Indian Brigade.

The infantry battalions of the 5th Indian Brigade who had dug in after a successful overnight advance await the 22nd Armoured Brigade's tanks to pass before leaving their trenches and moving forward to engage with the Afrika Korps.

This was the later stages of the battle of El Alamein and the turning point in the Second World War for the Allies, forcing the Axis forces out of North Africa and clearing the way for the Allies to attack Hitler's fortress Europe from Sicily and Italy.
Churchill claimed later that 'Before Alamein we never had a victory, after Alamein we never had a defeat.'
